How To Solve Information Overload Problem (?)
Imagine you’re working in an office. You’re job is not the most important one in the office, but still, you have a little bit of responsibility.
In order to preform your work the way you’re expected to, you have to read 2 magazines each month. If you stay behind, you might miss important advances and new markets that are emerging. Which means comptitors will kill your company before you have the chance to say Tim Berners Lee.
Reading 2 magazines a month is not that tough. But recently there was an advance in the magazines technology and suddenly it’s much more easier to produce a magazine and takes X7 less time to publish one. So suddenly there are 3 more magazines in your area of expertise.
Now you need to read 5 magazines a month to stay updated.
Few smart kids get out of college and decide to improve the magazines technology. They do so and many people notice it.
Now it’s even much more easier to produce a magazine so many more new people decide to start one them selves. They hope to make a small income from it or maybe just enjoy the creation feeling.
You’re still working in this office and you don’t want to loose your job. But right now there are 15 magazines you have to read each month to stay updated. Some of them repeat them selves but you don’t want to take the chances that you’ll miss something so you read them all.
One day your boss decides to analyze your productivity and he sees that you are now reading 4 hours a day and a year ago you read only 0.2 hours a day. You explain to him that it’s because of the improvements in the magazines technology.
Boss heard about the problem from almost any other boss he knows. He quickly understands that it will get even worst in the next few months and years. He might find his employees and him self reading 7 hours a day to stay on top of everything they need to know.
That brings him to a conclusion that someone has to find a solution for this huge problem society is facing.
He’s contemplating what’s the best way to solve the information overload problem but can’t figure out for sure.
